An analysis of educational approaches to developing Computational Thinking

Framework

The study is designed and funded by the Joint Research Centre – Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (JRC-IPTS) of the European Commission.

Objectives

The study “An analysis of educational approaches to developing Computational Thinking (CompuThink)” aims to provide a comprehensive overview of recent research findings and grass root and policy initiatives for developing computational thinking as a 21st century competence among primary/secondary students, as well as major implications for policy and practice.

Workplan

A qualitative approach will be used in the study. Specifically, an extensive desk research of academic and grey literature will be complemented by a number of semi-structured interviews with experts and policy makers involved in the implementation of relevant policy and grassroots initiatives. Finally, the two kinds of findings (as emerged from the literature reviews and the interviews) will be integrated by means of an ad-hoc approach, so as to create a unitary and comprehensive framework of the field.

Expected results

• An extensive review of academic and grey literature and policy documents;

• Semi-structured interviews with experts, policy makers and stakeholders;

• A final report summarizing research findings on the impact of CT on learning and teaching patterns, approaches and paradigms in primary and secondary schools in Europe.
