Development of an environment for acquiring problem solving skills in mathematics

Il Bosco Incantato (Enchanted Wood) is a multimedia environment for developing and regaining cognitive and metacognitive skills involved in understanding and solving maths problems. The theoretical framework for the project is that proposed by Lucangeli et al. in "Model of the components in mathematical problem solving" (1998).

The starting point of the project was to identify the cognitive abilities involved in mathematical problem solving and the potential obstacles that may be faced in the solving process. This study provided the foundations for the construction of a learning path based on the use of multimedia components in a motiviting learning context in which students play an active role in building their own knowledge.

The aim of the software is to develop cognitive and metacognitive skills involved in understanding and solving maths problems, as well as to foster the emotional-motivational aspects of problem solving. The program is designed for students in the final years of primary school and for those experiencing difficulty in this area.
