Framework

This initiative is dedicated to investigation of innovative learning environments that support the development of transversal skills like creativity, problem solving, critical thinking and learning to learn, as well as subject-based competencies. This involves exploration of different learning approaches, such as inquiry-based learning, collaborative learning, narrative learning, etc., together with activities that leverage the educational affordances of new technologies (mobile, tangible, immersive). Another key aspect of interest is the change being brought about by pervasive social networking and our shifting relationship with knowledge in the digitally-driven world. These matters are to be investigated within both basic and applied research, focusing on the interconnection between learning processes and new digital tools and environments.

Objectives

  • Design and test innovative learning environments that help users develop (a) the capacity to gather, understand, process and produce complex, structured information across scientific domains and the humanities, and (b) a range of transversal skills regarding logical and computational thinking, probem solving, etc.
  • Investigate networking dynamics in the use of social media for learning and professional development.

Major activities

Together with numerous research and development activities, this initiative has generated major dissemination and outreach undertakings (e.g. participation in the Genoa Science Festival) and well as education and training aimed at social empowerment and engagement, and digital literacy. Many of these activities have been carried out in collaboration with governmental and other public bodies at both regional and national levels.

These activities will continue in the coming years. Special effort will be dedicated to disseminating the results obtained and maximising their impact both academically and in terms of practical application.
