Flavio Manganello
from CNR-ITD and Davide Capobianco from Ca’ Foscari University of Venice have just published a new article called “Tabletop Role-Playing Games for Social Skill Development in Adult Learning: A Scoping Review”. The paper appears in Games in Learning and Teaching, an international open-access journal published by the Global Institute of Leadership and Technology (GILT).

Flavio and Davide investigate whether tabletop role-playing games, such as Dungeons & Dragons, can be effective tools for developing social skills in adults. Their study investigates this question via a systematic review of sixteen international empirical studies on the topic. The results show that collaborative storytelling, role-playing and group problem-solving can foster empathy, negotiation skills and leadership, both in education and in business. The review also highlights ongoing challenges facing research on this topic, including the need for larger sample populations and standardised assessment tools.
