The article “Explainable AI in Higher Education Assessment: A Bibliometric Exploration of an Emerging Research Domain”, by Flavio Manganello, Alberto Nico and Giannangelo Boccuzzi, has been published in the Turkish Online Journal of Distance Education (vol. 27, no. 4, pp. 200-222). The study reports a bibliometric analysis of 72 Scopus-indexed publications (2019-2025) on explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) in higher education assessment, with reference to regulatory frameworks such as the GDPR and the EU AI Act.

Publication output has grown from single contributions in 2019-2020 to 26 documents in 2024, and is organised around four thematic areas: AI transparency methodologies, educational analytics applications, machine learning implementations and student performance prediction systems. The authors describe their findings as preliminary evidence and point to the need for terminological standardisation and for longitudinal research on the regulatory drivers of the field.
