The article ““Exploring the Integration of Generative AI and Game-Based Learning in Mathematics Education: A Narrative Literature Review”, by Martina Ragusa and Flavio Manganello (CNR-ITD), has been published in Educational Considerations (vol. 51, issue 3). The narrative review analyses nine empirical studies from 2024-2025 on the use of large language models such as ChatGPT within game-based and gamified approaches to mathematics.
Three modalities of integration emerge from the corpus: authoring tools, pedagogical agents and problem-solving environments. Two quasi-experimental studies report reduced mathematics anxiety, while difficulties persist in scaffolding for students with knowledge gaps and in the authenticity of AI-generated problems. The authors develop three interpretive frameworks, offered as working hypotheses, and distinguish access equity from outcomes equity. The article is available in open access.
