As artificial intelligence and large language models become increasingly integrated into higher education assessment, ensuring fairness, transparency, validity, and accountability is more important than ever. The extension of this Research Topic provides additional time to collect high quality contributions that examine the opportunities and challenges of AI-supported assessment and promote evidence-based, ethical, and human-centered approaches to educational evaluation.

We welcome submissions addressing topics such as automated assessment, AI-assisted feedback, validity and reliability, accessibility, institutional governance, benchmarking frameworks, and the implications of emerging policies, including the EU AI Act. The new manuscript submission deadline is 18 September 2026.

The Research Topic is coordinated by an international editorial team comprising Topic Editors Flavio Manganello (CNR-ITD), Martin Ebner (Graz University of Technology), Marta López-Costa (Open University of Catalonia), and Alexandra Lazareva (University of Agder), together with Topic Coordinator Giannangelo Boccuzzi (CNR-ITD).
