Logo Kaleidoscope - Conditions for productive networked learning environments

The objective of the ERT on Conditions for Productive Networked Learning Environments is to develop and elaborate theoretical concepts and understandings of CSCL (Computer Supported Collaborative Learning). The project's focus is on the application of cross-cultural comparative approaches that have been adopted in cases covering a range of real higher educational settings and that concern existing practices. The point of departure for this work will lie in the meta-ethnography of the cases collected in the course of the JEIRP (Jointly Executed Integrating Research Project): these provide rich descriptions to use as a basis for reasoning and theorising on how findings can be applicable to similar cases.

Drawing on meta-ethnology, the ERT will analyse and synthesize the case studies with the aim of developing an inductive and interpretive form of knowledge synthesis that will prove helpful not only for the work of educational practitioners and researchers but also for policy makers.

The ERT will adopt a socio-cultural based approach, drawing upon and comparing the following established theoretical perspectives:

  • social theory of learning;
  • the cultural-historical approach to learning;
  • actor-network learning theory;
  • experiential learning.

In this perspective, the ERT will be concerned with the following aspects/study objects:

  • design of networked learning environments (technological functionalities, design features and affordances);
  • collaboration / networks / communities of practice;
  • ethics / trust;
  • individual - group - community - identity;
  • scaffolding (type and degree of structure).
