Observing social and communication skills in online learning

This project has led to the creation and testing of an observation checklist for evaluating several social and communication skills that come into play during collaborative online learning. The aim of the project is to understand the relationship between "classic" and "new" skills involved in computer-mediated communication. Network communication is carried out using some of the tools in the NetMeeting program:

  • Chat - for informal social interaction;
  • File sharing - for exchanging information and conducting group work;
  • Interactive whiteboard - a space for creative work and group decision making.

Learning activities are based on the framework underpinning the co-op co-op cooperative learning model.

The checklist developed in the project comprises 60 items subdivided into 3 separate lists. Each of these corresponds to observations about the capacity of children to establish positive relationships with remote classmates during online activity using the three different communication tools.

The corpus of cooperative online learning activities was designed for use by primary school teachers and pupils.
