Donatella Persico has been active in the field of educational and training technology - theory and applications, since 1981, covering roles of increasing responsibility at the Institute for Educational Technology of the Italian National Research Council (CNR-ITD). Her major research interests include methods and tools for learning design and evaluation, open and distance learning techniques, computer-supported collaborative learning, self-regulated learning, game-based learning and teacher training. She is author of educational material of various kinds (books, educational software and multimedia material with patents) as well as of several research papers and essays concerning aspects of educational technology. In addition, since 2009, she is editor-in-chief of the Italian Journal of Educational Technology (IJET), formerly TD Tecnologie Didattiche, one of the Italian top-ranking journals according to ANVUR, the Italian National Agency in charge of the evaluation of the research Institutions and scientific journals.
In 1985, she was visiting scientist at the Psychology Department of the University of Bradford, UK, in 1986; at the Computer Science department of Exeter University, UK, in 2013; at Glasgow Caledonian Academy, UK, in 2018, and at the department of Pedagogy and Didactic of the university of Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
From 2000 to 2006, she was lecturer of Educational Technology for the post-graduate school for secondary teaching of the University of Genoa. From 2015 to 2023, she was a member of the board of the doctoral school in “Philosophy and Educational Sciences” of Cà Foscari university of Venice. She still frequently lectures and gives talks on various themes pertaining to her research interests. She still occasionally supervises PhD students.
She sat on many professional boards including the Scientific Committee of CNR-ITD, the Regional Committee of the Italian computing society (AICA), the Comitato tecnico scientifico del centro Centro UniPR Co-Lab, the board of experts on mobile devices of the Italian Ministry of Education and still belongs to a number of journal scientific boards and professional associations. In particular, since 2023, she is a member of the executive committee of the Collaborative Knowledge Building Group (CKBG) and the Association for Smart Learning Ecosystems and Regional Development (ASLERD).
She has been involved in the organization of several national and international conferences and has given a number of invited talks and keynote speeches.
