Systems, enabling technologies and methods for distance learning

Framework

National project funded by the Italian Ministry for University and Research within the FIRB programme

Objectives

Aim of the project is to develop an e-learning system for higher education where different media and communication modes are integrated in satellite-terrestrial platform. The system will be used by the UNITEL distance university to run experimental courses.

Workplan

The project entails two main phases. The first phase (2007-2009) consists of the design and implementation of an integrated satellite-terrestrial platform for the delivery of distance learning services.
In the second phase (2010-2011) a pilot course is designed and delivered while the system evaluation is carried out.

Expected results

The main expected results are:

  • an e-learning model for higher education that integrates different communication modes to meet the needs of a target population scattered on the territory and mobile;
  • an integrated technological satellite-terrestrial platform;
  • a software system to manage and run online courses allowing an efficient support of interactive distance learning services, both synchronous and asynchronous, directed to users with low-cost satellite terminals and Internet access;
  • an online pilot course allowing the validation of both the technological and educational components of the system.
  • a validation model for higher education e-learning systems and services.
