Computational Thinking - Problem Solving - Coding

Framework

The digital revolution that so radically and pervasively transformed today’s knowledge society has also called into question the way computing is approached as a discipline in schools and universities. Computational thinking has become a key term in this debate. It encompasses the problem solving mindset of a programmer, and embraces concepts and competences that can be profitably extended and applied outside the domain of computing. Indeed there are increasing calls for it to be integrated into school curricula, a process that has already begun in many countries following in the wake of its introduction into the English curriculum in 2014.

Objectives

This project seeks to arrive at a functional definition of computational thinking that enables it to be positioned and operationalised at different school levels, beginning from primary school. This would also facilitate the integration of computational thinking in teacher training initiatives so that it may become part of educational praxis. To this end, suitable training materials will be produced. In addition, steps will be taken to formulate a methodological framework and strategy underpinning the introduction of computational thinking in a range of different school contexts.
