Accessibility of Educational Software

The Aessedi project addresses the issue of educational software accessibility, and is part of a general program on New Technology and Disability undertaken by Italy's Ministry of Education.

Background

The Aessedi project is part of a government initiative to support the application of Article 5, Law 4/2004 (Disability Act), which stipulates that the software applications used by all public bodies, including schools, must be accessible. Currently, the low degree of accessibility of software products being used in Italy's schools is seriously undermining the opportunity for disabled students to participate fully in classroom activities. To avoid the risk of the accessibility law being treated as a mere formality, a far-reaching awareness campaign in schools is called for.

Objectives

  • Make schools aware of issues regarding the accessibility of educational software and management applications used in the school system.
  • Establish an educational software information service that evaluates the accessibility of products currently available to schools.
  • Promote innovative schemes that support the production by schools of accessible material and teaching units.

Undertakings

  • Activities for raising awareness about educational software accessibility issues.
  • Launching of pilot programs in schools for the creation of accessible teaching plans.
  • Evaluation of educational software accessibility.
